I-Bas-Dolomiti Lucane
Region: Basilicata. The beautiful ‘Dolomiti Lucane’ are characterised by high peaks with odd shapes that suggested imaginative names, such as the eagle, the anvil, the big mother, the owl. They are part of a mountain complex that dates back to 15 million years ago. The highest mountains are those of the Costa di San Martino, called ‘Piccole Dolomiti’, because they reproduce the sharpness and the characteristics of the famous ‘Pule Trentine’. Very beautiful are also the peaks of the Murge di Castelmezzano and those of the Carrozze Mountain. The Rio di Capperino Stream is very evocative: it has hollowed a deep gorge that divides the ‘Murge di Castelmezzano’ from the ‘Costa di S.Martino’. In the most inaccessible ravines of the Dolomiti Lucane several species of birds nest, amongst them kites, kestrels and peregrine falcons. In spite of the bare appearance, the peaks offer interesting vegetation that includes red valerian and honesty. At the back of the Dolomiti Lucane there are the evocative villages of Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa. |
I-Bas-Mount Alpi
Region: Basilicata. Mount Alpi, to the north of Latronico, is an enormous craterous area quite unusual in Basilicata (more typical of Abruzzo and North-East Campania), where alabaster for ornamental marble is obtained. It is a wild area with groups of loricate pines, meadows and wild flowers. There is also a beech forest, that of Moliterno, with huge trees at times reaching a metre in diameter and 30 metres in height. The smaller vegetation is also captivating with its holly, spindle, red lilies, narcissus, spurge and ferns. The village of Roccanova, built on a hillock between the River Agri and the River Sinni, was used to be a powerful stronghold in the Chiaromonte County. Archaeological excavations in the area brought to the surface some finds dating from the VI century B.C. They show that it used to be a Greek colony. The famous wine 'Grottino di Roccanova' is kept in caves, into big wooden barrels. The wine festival takes places from September to October. |
I-Bas-Mount Volturino
Region: Basilicata. The Volturino Mountain (1,836 m) the name of which comes from the Latin word 'vulture', is an imposing massif of volcanic rock, having two peaks of almost the same height and separated by a fertile green valley. Its top is covered by thick beech woods surrounded by wide pastures. The colours of this Mountain are revived by its snowy peaks and it is the destination of numerous excursionists who come to discover the beauties of nature on its peaks and passes. Volturino is also a well-appreciated ski station. On this Mountain is a slope more than 2 km long, served by a two-seater chair lift of 1,500 metres, which can transport about 1,000 passengers per hour. |
I-Bas-Mount Vulture region
Region: Basilicata. Mount Vulture (pronounced "Vooltooreh") is an extinct volcano located 56 km north of the city Potenza in the Basilicata region (Italy). As a prominent landmark it gave its name to the Vulture region, the most significant viticultural zone in Basilicata growing the DOC wine Aglianico del Vulture. With a height of 1326 m, it is unique amongst large Italian volcanoes due to its location east of the Apennine mountain range. The fertile volcanic soil allows for the cultivation of excellent grapes and olives and is rich in mineral waters. Among the sights to visit are the two lakes of Monticchio within the volcano and the two castles of Frederick II of Hohenstaufen at Castel Lagopesole and Melfi. First inhabited by the Normans, that occupied the ancient castle near Sgarroni (Castrum Monticuli), it became, in the second half of 19th century, a strategic point for brigands after Italian unification. |
I-Bas-Pollino National Park
Region: Basilicata. The Pollino National Park (Italian: Parco nazionale del Pollino) is a national park in Basilicata and Calabria, southern Italy. Comprised within the provinces of Cosenza, Matera and Potenza, with its 1,820 square kilometres it is the largest natural park in the country. It takes its name from the Pollino Massif (highest peak 2,267 m). It was founded in 1992 and includes both natural and archaeological points of interest. The park's symbol is the Bosnian Pine, which here has one of its last remaining growing areas in Italy. Towns with interesting sights include Rotonda, Castrovillari, Morano Calabro (convent of Colloreto), Laino Castello, Mormanno, Scalea, Papasidero, Civita, Cerchiara (church of Madonna delle Armi). Albanian-speaking communities are present in communes such as San Paolo Albanese, San Costantino Albanese and others. In the Valle del Mercure have been discovered remains of pre-historic species such as Elephas antiquus and Hippopotamus major. Rivers and streams include the Lao, Sinni, Coscile and Raganello. This Park is a wonderful natural sight with spectacular peaks, rich woods and fauna amongst the rarest and most interesting in the South of Italy. The main characteristic of this area is the variability of its vegetation. Its landscapes go from maquis to beech woods, from the prairies on the heights with gentians and asphodels, to woods of Turkey oaks and oaks. For the great variety and quantity of medicinal herbs available in this area some think that the name of the Mountain comes from ‘Apollo’, Greek god of health. Amongst the various trees of the park, notable species include Abies alba, Acer lobelii, Fagus sylvatica, Pinus heldreichii, Pinus nigra, Taxus baccata and others. Wildlife include Golden Eagle, Italian Wolf, Roe Deer, Black Woodpecker, Chough, Peregrine Falcon, Red Kite, Lanner Falcon, Driomys nitedula, Egyptian Vulture, European Otter and Deer |
I-Bas-Stone Lake of the Pertusillo
Region: Basilicata. Lago di Pietra del Pertusillo (Stone Lake of the Pertusillo) is a lake in the Province of Potenza, Basilicata, Italy. At an elevation of 532 m, its surface area is 630 km². The dam of the so-called Stone Lake of the Pertusillo was built in the 50s, in the Spinoso area, damming up the River Agri, where the Pertusillo narrows. This dam has a capacity of 145-155 million cubic metres of water. In spite of the fact that this work had a very strong impact on the environment, preservation and respect for the environment allow the proliferation in the area of several animal species, including some uncommon ones, living in the lake. Amongst the sedentary animals are bald-coots, wild ducks, dun-birds and most of the birds of prey of Italy. In the isolated parts of the lake also the grey heron can be found. |
I-Bas-The Sirino-Papa Massif
Region: Basilicata. The Sirino-Papa Massif (2,000 metres high) is the second highest peak in the Southern Apennines. On a slope of the Papa Mountain, in the Sirino Massif, at 1.500 metres on the level of the sea, there is the hollow of the small Laudemio Lake. It is the most Southern lake of glacial origin and is 25 hectares wide. Winter snow attracts here all those who love winter sports. They can find several ski tows and a new chair lift that reaches 1.800 metres. Around Laudemio Lake, Nordic skiing and cross-country skiing can be practised. In the other seasons, mountains offer many opportunities for those who love open-air activities. In spring, melting snow creates wonderful falls that flow into the most important streams in the area. In summertime ‘cookery walks’ can be organised, as well as camping. From middle summer to late autumn mushrooms pickers will find here their paradise. The reserve is also characterised by the presence of some plants, such as the Vicia sinnicae and the Astragalus sirinicus. These are two plants that grow only in this area of the Sirino Mountain. In the woods there is plenty of strawberries, raspberries and blackberries. Near the lake there is a sculpture dedicated to the mountain-dweller. Not far from the Laudemio Lake there is the Sirino Lake, at the foot of Serra Roccazzo. |
