Google Maps and TomTom: these two can work together.
Google Maps and TomTom: these two are worth to gather.

Google Maps is a nice application.
You can view any place on earth you like.
A TomTom is a very nice device.
You can go any place on earth you like.
But why don't these tools work together?

It would be great if Google Maps and TomTom could cooperate:
  • A TomTom device does not cooperate with Google Maps by itself.
  • I wanted the possibility to point out my routes and some points of interest at home with my computer.
  • If you buy a TomTom device, you can use the 'TomTom HOME' software, but the possibilities of this application to plot a route are not really great.
  • I did not want to push my finger onto the touch screen of my TomTom device every time: to add one waypoint to an itinerary, I had to crawl about three or four TomTom screens each time...

What do you have to do to make Google Maps and your TomTom cooperate as a good team?
As a matter of fact, it is really simple.
I wrote a small application myself. Everyone may download and use it freely.
You can use it to create itineraries (route files) and also to create files with points of interest.

Here is Tyre: Trace Your Route Everywhere.
Tyre is a nice program that makes Google Maps and your TomTom cooperate.

Tyre is freeware!
You may use it and copy it, as long as you do not change anything in the software.

Have a look!

It looks good, does not it? Now it is very easy to plot your routes: Tyre has lots of built-in features from Google Maps and from itself. This combination makes a perfectly equipped planning tool.

You make a start by placing your waypoints on the map, just by clicking on the right locations, anywhere you like, to plot a beautiful trip.
Ready? You can have your route being calculated to watch a preview of your trip. You can even 'ride' (or 'drive') your trip step by step, to see how it will be in the real world!
Satisfied? Save your itinerary onto your TomTom device and enjoy your trip!

Of course you can open and edit all itinerary files that are created by you or by other people. It is even possible to import lots of other file formats (like files from Garmin devices, etc.).

Do you prefer Google Earth over Google Maps? That is also a possibility. Choose 'Options' from the 'Extra' menu to switch between using Google Maps and Google Earth. But if you want to use Google Earth, you have to download and install it yourself from www.earth.google.com.

Tyre can work with POI files (Points of Interest) too!

  • Open, create and edit your own POI files...
  • Install POI files from Internet and keep them updated!
  • Publish your own POI files and share them with other people!

In my opinion it is not really risky, but I tell you this just in case... I don't want any trouble.

The Dutch magazine 'Computer!Totaal' dedicated an article to Tyre.
(At that time Tyre was still known by its old name 'Google-TomTom'.)

There was also an article in 'Computer Idee' of May 2008 (#11).

The online magazine motorblaadje.nl is really enthusiastic about Tyre!
